OBERACKER TO GOVERNOR:
OPEN CAR DEALERS IN PHASE ONE
Candidate for State Senate Calls on Governor to add
on-site car sales to phase one of NY Reopen Plan
Schenevus, NY – Candidate for New York State Senate, Peter Oberacker called on Governor Cuomo to add on-site auto sales to the list of businesses included in phase one of the NY Re-open Plan.
“We need to get all our businesses open and restart our economy as quickly, safely, and responsibly as possible. Car sales are an important part of our economy and local revenues. We need to allow them reopened as soon as we can,” Oberacker said.
Currently in New York, car dealers are limited to online sales only, but Oberacker believes that if someone needs or wants to buy a car they should have the option to fully inspect and test drive the vehicle beforehand.
“If done correctly and with the right precautions, there is no reason we cannot fully open auto dealers, “Oberacker continued.
Oberacker also pointed out that car sales produce some of the highest revenues for local governments. In Otsego County, car sales represent 12.5% of the county’s revenues, higher than any other revenue source. Chenango County is nearly 17%, in Cortland and Schoharie Counties it represents the highest source with Schoharie generating 25% of its tax revenues from car sales.
“As our local municipalities across the 51st Senate District are facing massive declines in revenues due to the COVID-19 shutdown, car sales could be a needed boost to help deliver essential services to residents and taxpayers,” Oberacker continued.
“As a small business owner and County Legislator, I understand first hand the impact the COVID-19 shut down has had. Small businesses have been patient and compliant, but have also taken the brunt of the impact. Now it is time to get our economy up and running again and ensure small businesses are able to get back on their feet and find success,” Oberacker concluded.
